There are certain cities in the world where you are likely to experience a long layover in your air travels. One of the most common of these is the London layover. I experienced a 19-hour stop there in early July.

Most of us don't want to do anything that will risk a missed flight. But if you have at least eight hours between your flights, do you really want to spend that time in a Heathrow or Gatwick terminal when there is so much to see and experience in Central London? Both airports have efficient train connections to the center of the city. Just be sure to allow plenty of time for delays and long security lines.

For decades now, travelers in Japan have booked capsule hotel rooms for convenience and savings. In some cases, the "rooms" are better described as a large box equipped with a bed and a nightstand, as well as a shelf for writing or using a laptop. Could this concept reach beyond Asia to other parts of the world where the need for budget travel comes in sharp conflict with high real estate prices and sharp hotel demand?
